SGW Dragon Fruit Trellis Setup (2023)
Here’s a video of my dragon fruit trellis set up during Spring 2023 in Central Texas Zone 8b. During that spring, I made new dragon fruit trellises and transplanted my larger plants into larger containers.
Ideally, dragon fruits must be grown vertically up a trellis with branches hanging down the top. Once the plants reach a certain size and age and are fertilized with phosphorus, they may produce flowers on the gravity-pulled branches.
I made this video as a promo for live cactus sales and markets in the Central Texas area. (My online store is still in the works for Spring 2024. I plan to do shipping within the continental United States (no international shipping)).
I hope to make a long...

Banish Misfortune Jig: Irish Fiddle and Viola
Просмотров 139Месяц назад
St. Patrick’s month is ending, and this is the last fiddle of my Tune and Dance a Day for March 2024. I’m playing a very common Irish jig called Banish Misfortune on Irish fiddle and viola. I want to continue posting Irish fiddle and dance videos throughout the year. It was fun to comb through the years of Irish-related videos and explain the stories and memories behind them. I’m still figuring...

Dowd’s No. 9: Sean Nós Irish Dance

This is a dance video from many years ago at the Trinity Hall Irish Pub in Dallas, TX. I was in town for a wedding, and I stopped by the weekend Irish music session before heading to the reception. There I played with the Dallas/Fort Worth area musicians and even did some steps on my portable dance board. It’s always great to attend different Irish music sessions. This was the first time I hear...

      Awesome! ☺ As of May 2024, about three seedlings (featured in the video) are 4 years old. Two are in 7-10 gallon pots and are about six feet tall! I transplanted them in February 2024, and they love their new containers. I hope to see some flowering by next year! Five years from seeds is a good marker to expect flowers!

    • @shamrockgirl804
      @shamrockgirl804 15 дней назад

      Thank you so much! In Austin, there are loquat trees in a public park near Mueller, and I know of other locations in south Austin. A bunch of my loquat seedlings died from the extreme 2023 summer heat. But I planned to grow them to produce fruit. As of May 2024, my eight-year-old loquat from seed has five precious fruits. It's been flowering since it was four years old, but it has never held fruit due to annual winter freezes. I also noticed loquats trees in Austin are coming back and holding their fruit. They haven't been the same since the 2021 freeze. If you're in Houston, I recommend Linda's Tropical Fruits on Bellaire Blvd for seasonal loquats and other exotic fruits! I'll make day trips just to go there!

    Thank you for this thorough and informative video. A friend from Costa Rica just gave me Atis (what we call it in the Philippines) seeds from the fruit she just ate. I'm looking forward to growing them. I live in South Florida. I've never grown anything from seed. How tall do they get?

    • @shamrockgirl804
      @shamrockgirl804 15 дней назад

      Thank you so much! Since you're in Florida, where they'll flourish, they might grow at least 10 feet tall. You can definitely grow them from seeds and in the ground. Many Annona fruits grow very well in south Florida, for what I hear. I'll say that growing them from seed is faster compared to other tropical fruit trellis. They still may not grow from seeds but they're reliable. My first sugar apple from seed produced one fruit at three years old! That's still impressive!

    Hi. Where did you get the vacuum? Others I see have different filters.

    • @shamrockgirl804
      @shamrockgirl804 15 дней назад

      In the video description, I have an amazon affiliate link to the vacuum that I used. I bought two vacuums because I had multiple varieties bloom during the same night. I made sure to collect and clean them in between varieties! lol The vacuums have filters but the pollen is easy to brush off. It becomes a problem if the pollen or atmosphere is sticky or humid. I used coffee filters as a temporary filters while I cleaned the device's filter. In fall 2023, after I made the video, I had issues with sticky pollen.

    • @shamrockgirl804
      @shamrockgirl804 15 дней назад

      The leaves might droop when there's a temperature or environment change. If they're green and strong, they may perk up due to sunlight or the time of day. For example, the leaves are broad and spaced out in the morning. But in the afternoon, they'll be slender and compact. So it might be adjust to the amount of sunlight.

      When they're young, they should be in partial sun. Usually, they'll growing underneath their 'parent' plant. As they grow taller and hardier, they'll adjust to more or full sun. But as seedlings, they should be in partial sun.

    I love the story behind Tammy. And the care you gave her. But I have to jettison the idea of planting a tamarind tree. I do not have your patience. Thanks for sharing.

    • @shamrockgirl804
      @shamrockgirl804 15 дней назад

      Thank you so much! It's a waiting game for sure. In August 2022, when Tammy was seven years old, she produced one flower! I was so surprised and happy that she produced a flower for the first time. But it didn't produce even though Tammy was very healthy. As years go on, I'm realizing that my natural growing zone may be too short for tamarinds. They'll grow and produce new branches and leaves, but I don't think they'll make productive flowers and fruit. My tamarinds HATE the winter greenhouse and they'll have to start from ground zero in the spring when I take them outside. If anything, it's a nice plant to grow passively. Apparently, you can eat and cook the sour leaves in dishes! I might try that soon!

      Last year, in Spring 2023, I went to a tropical fruit store in Houston, TX, and they had Gold Nugget loquats from Florida for sale. At the time, it was highly sought after because local loquats were still recovering from the February 2021 Texas freeze and barely had fruit. I deliberately went there to buy the fruit. But you’re right. I’ve never seen loquats for sale in stores (other than that store in Houston that sells rare fruits, too). I’ve always eaten from local trees. Now, in April 2024, loquat fruits are returning to the Austin area. I can finally harvest fruit from mine and local public trees! 😋

    Are the in the Houston area? My Dragon fruit froze out over the past couple of years. I had them in the green house before but losing power the 2 and 3 winters ago defeated the use of the greenhouse. Last winter I had them covered with some of my citrus but that got too cold, I guess.

    • @shamrockgirl804
      @shamrockgirl804 Месяц назад

      I’m in the Austin area. These annual arctic freezes make it hard to keep our tropical plants alive. But I’m selling dragon fruit cuttings at Central Texas events this spring. I’m selling at the Cactus Market ATX sale on May 11th near the Austin Airport and Austin Plant Party on May 25th in south Austin. I still plan to launch an online store (continental US only), but it may have to wait until June 2024, when all the plants are out of the greenhouse and settled.
